The portrait should occupy approximately 75–85 percent of the canvas height, measured from the tips of the ears to the shoulder crop. The head should fill most of the central canvas, with the shoulders spreading naturally across the lower central area.

Keep the pet centered and front-facing. Position the face near the visual center, with the eyes slightly above the horizontal midpoint.

Show:

the entire head

both complete ears

the neck

the upper shoulders only

only a small amount of upper chest when naturally necessary

Crop the portrait at the shoulders. The shoulders may naturally meet or be cropped by the bottom edge of the canvas.

Do not show the full chest, lower torso, front legs, paws, seated body, or any body area below the shoulders. Do not zoom out or make the pet small within a large background.

Leave a moderate amount of white breathing room above and beside the ears while keeping the head and shoulders large. Keep both ears completely inside the canvas.

Render the face and upper head in detailed, high-contrast painterly realism. The eyes, nose, muzzle, and central facial features must be the sharpest and most refined parts of the artwork. Include realistic eye reflections, natural highlights, dimensional shadows, carefully defined fur direction, and selective individual fur strands.

Keep every recognizable part of the pet in its authentic natural colors. Avoid an overly smooth, photographic, airbrushed, or digitally polished finish. The portrait should retain the expressive character of traditional ink-and-watercolor artwork while remaining realistic and immediately recognizable.

Paper and Overall Medium

Place the portrait on bright white, visibly textured cold-press watercolor paper.

The exposed paper should show subtle natural grain, small surface irregularities, and a tactile handmade quality. Keep the paper bright and clean rather than beige, gray, vintage, or heavily stained.

Most of the exposed background must remain visibly white.

Colored Ink-Splatter Background — Critical Style

Create the background from concentrated colored liquid ink and watercolor pigment that appears to have been physically flicked, sprayed, dropped, splashed, dragged, and dry-brushed onto the paper.

The background must feel raw, graphic, spontaneous, high-contrast, and handmade. It should resemble genuine liquid-ink impacts on textured paper rather than soft decorative watercolor, smoke, mist, a blended aura, or a digital particle effect.

Use this exact color palette (vibrant):

teal, cobalt blue, magenta, violet, orange, and golden yellow.

All six colors must be visibly present, but they should not be distributed equally. Allow teal, cobalt blue, violet, and magenta to form many of the deeper high-contrast marks. Use orange and golden yellow as selective energetic accents.

The densest areas of individual splatters may have deep, concentrated centers, but they must retain their identifiable colors. Do not turn the colorful background into black or grayscale ink.

Required Types of Background Marks

Use an irregular combination of:

numerous tiny pinprick speckles

fine sprayed droplets

small and medium circular ink drops

several isolated larger pigment blots

irregular star-shaped splash impacts

thin diagonal flick lines

long narrow ink trajectories ending in round droplets

short broken streaks

scattered pigment fragments

scratchy dry-brush marks

dragged ink smears

rough bristle textures

splintered painted edges

a few short downward drips

occasional pooled pigment spots with dark centers and crisp, uneven edges

Some droplets should remain nearly round. Others may have imperfect edges, narrow drip tails, or small satellite specks.

Include several thin directional flicks traveling diagonally upward and outward behind the pet. These marks should create loose, spontaneous movement without forming a centered or symmetrical explosion.

Every mark should remain individually visible. Do not merge the splatters into one continuous watercolor mass.

Upper Background Activity — Important

The upper portion of the canvas must contain clearly visible and substantial splatter activity. Do not reduce the upper background to only a few nearly invisible specks.

Place a lively but controlled mixture of colorful marks:

above the head

above both ears

diagonally behind the ears

in the upper-left and upper-right background

across selected areas of the upper third of the canvas

Use numerous tiny droplets, several small and medium round splatters, a few larger off-center pigment drops, thin upward flick lines, narrow ink trajectories, and occasional irregular star-shaped impacts.

Include approximately:

several visible diagonal flicks and ink trails across the upper third

multiple small and medium droplets above and beside the ears

two to four larger isolated pigment impacts in different upper-background areas

fine surrounding satellite speckles around selected larger drops

The upper marks should be noticeable and expressive, not timid or excessively sparse. However, preserve open white spaces between the separate splatters so the background does not become a solid field of color.

Do not place all upper splashes directly behind the center of the head. Distribute them asymmetrically across the upper-left, upper-center, and upper-right areas.

Some thin trajectories may pass behind the ears, but they must remain visibly separate from the pet and must not outline the ear shapes.

The upper splashes should feel like multiple independent ink impacts scattered across the paper—not a single explosion radiating from the pet.

Background Distribution Around the Pet

Along the left and right sides of the portrait, create asymmetrical clusters of small and medium splatters.

Some side areas may contain a dense spray of tiny flecks, while neighboring areas remain mostly white. Do not mirror the left and right sides.

Keep the immediate area around the eyes, muzzle, and central face relatively clean. Allow more splatter activity farther away from the face and around the outer ears, shoulders, and surrounding paper.

Concentrate the strongest pigment activity immediately behind and around the lower shoulders. Build this area from overlapping splashes, fragmented dry-brush textures, irregular pigment impacts, broken painted fragments, and short directional streaks.

Because the portrait is tightly cropped at the shoulders, keep the heavier pigment activity connected visually to the lower shoulder area rather than spreading it evenly across the entire bottom.

The lower splatters may extend outward from the shoulders in short, irregular diagonal and lateral paths. They must not create a uniform starburst, circular halo, or straight horizontal band.

Include a few narrow vertical drips beneath or beside the lower shoulders. Keep them short, isolated, irregular, and different in length.

The final distribution should contain:

clearly visible splashes across the upper background

asymmetrical droplets beside the head and ears

cleaner open space immediately around the central face

stronger pigment activity around the lower shoulders

abundant visible white watercolor paper between the marks

Color Separation and Pigment Behavior

Treat each splatter, droplet, flick, or brush fragment primarily as one identifiable color.

Allow occasional natural overlaps between teal, cobalt blue, magenta, violet, orange, and golden yellow. Where colors overlap, preserve visible layers and distinct pigment edges rather than blending everything into a rainbow.

Use a mixture of concentrated opaque marks and lightly translucent peripheral stains. Larger droplets may have dense pooled centers with slightly lighter outer edges.

Do not arrange the colors in rainbow order. Do not distribute them as evenly spaced decorative dots. Do not give every color the same number, size, or placement of marks.

Do not blend the palette into a continuous multicolored wash, soft color cloud, pastel fog, smooth gradient, glowing aura, muddy pigment mass, or blended rainbow background.

Interaction Between the Background and the Pet

Keep the face, eyes, forehead, muzzle, nose, and central facial markings completely clean and unobstructed.

Most background marks should appear behind the pet rather than painted over it.

Allow only a small number of tiny droplets, faint pigment fragments, or narrow dry-brush marks to lightly graze selected outer fur tips. The contact should appear accidental, subtle, and natural.

Do not uniformly outline the pet with color. Do not trace the ears, head, neck, or shoulders with paint. Do not create a glowing or painted rim around the animal.

Keep most of the upper head and ear silhouette crisp. Pigment may lightly touch a few isolated outer fur tips, but it must never cover or recolor important markings.

Controlled Shoulder Deconstruction

Begin loosening the realistic rendering only near the lowest part of the neck and shoulders.

Allow the outer and lower shoulder fur to transition gradually into expressive mixed-media marks, including fragmented fur edges, scratchy dry-brush textures, broken painted shapes, irregular colored ink splashes, small and medium droplets, short pigment streaks, scattered fragments, and unfinished watercolor textures.

The face, ears, head, and most of the neck must remain tightly rendered and realistic. Only the lowest shoulder edges may visibly fragment and merge with the surrounding colored ink.

The transition must be gradual and integrated. It should look as though the lower shoulder fur and pigment were created together in the same traditional medium—not as though random splatters were digitally placed over a finished photograph.

Retain enough natural fur color and anatomical structure for both shoulders to remain clearly readable.

Selective Painted Edge Strokes — Critical

Retain a small but clearly visible amount of rough painted treatment along selected outer edges of the canvas.

The edge marks should resemble accidental ink residue, partial dry-brush scrapes, cropped pigment splashes, and rough bristle streaks that extend beyond the paper.

Use approximately four to seven separate edge fragments in total.

Distribute them irregularly across only two or three sides of the canvas, such as:

one or two short broken strokes near a selected upper edge or upper corner

one isolated rough scrape along part of one side edge

one or two cropped splashes near a lower side or bottom corner

a few small edge-reaching droplets or pigment fragments

The edge strokes must be visible enough to contribute to the raw handmade style, but each one should remain short, broken, and isolated.

Allow individual edge fragments to vary in appearance. Some may be narrow dry-brush streaks, some may be small cropped splashes, and others may be scattered droplets reaching the edge.

Leave large uninterrupted sections of clean white paper between all edge marks.

Together, the edge fragments should occupy approximately 15–20 percent of the total canvas perimeter, while at least 80 percent of the perimeter remains completely clean and unpainted.

At least one entire corner should remain completely untouched. Avoid placing matching marks in opposite corners.

Do not place strokes continuously along all four edges. Do not connect one edge fragment to another. Do not run a long line parallel to an entire side.

The edge treatment must feel accidental and incomplete rather than architectural or decorative.

It must never form or suggest:

a square

a rectangle

a complete border

a continuous frame

four painted corners

a dark perimeter

a distressed picture-frame effect

an even outline around the canvas

Do not remove the edge marks entirely. A few visible, rough, irregular edge strokes must remain.

Essential Visual Hierarchy

The completed artwork must clearly combine:

a large, sharply rendered central pet portrait

an exclusive head-to-shoulders crop

authentic natural coat colors and markings

a bright white textured-paper background

clearly visible colorful splashes across the upper third

fine upward flicks and scattered droplets above both ears

asymmetrical splatter clusters beside the head

stronger pigment activity close to the lower shoulders

gradual and controlled shoulder-edge deconstruction

abundant open white negative space

a few noticeable but isolated rough strokes along selected canvas edges

The pet’s head and shoulders must remain the unmistakable focus and occupy most of the composition.

The colorful background should provide expressive energy without making the pet appear small, surrounding the animal with a halo, obscuring the face, or creating a painted square around the canvas.

Do Not Create

Do not create a full-body portrait, seated pet, long chest, torso, legs, paws, small distant subject, excessive empty space around the pet, empty upper background, barely visible upper splatters, giant central paint explosion, symmetrical radial burst, circular halo, watercolor ring, rainbow aura, dense pigment cloud, full-page wash, smooth gradient, pastel fog, neon glow, muddy color mass, evenly distributed confetti, repeating splatter pattern, mirrored background arrangement, uniformly painted area behind the head, heavy paint across the fur, color over the face, colored outline around the pet, continuous strokes along the outer edges, paint on all four sides, matching painted corners, rectangular distressed border, square-shaped edge treatment, complete frame, dark vignette, photographic background, scenery, plants, objects, text, collars, tags, accessories, room mockups, extra animals, cartoon styling, distorted anatomy, altered markings, or changed eye color.
